What if you could track your brain activity while focusing or unwinding? Maker The Civitas Universe took that curiosity to the next level by repurposing a brain scanner, designing a custom macro keypad, and 3D-printing a cyberpunk-inspired console, complete with its own power supply and interactive features. Showcasing a Cyberdeck that helps track brain activity and even gamifies meditation.
Maker came up with the idea of using a brain-tracking headset for custom use, which led to the creation of this cyberdeck. The maker has used Muse 2 headset, which already had Python support for brain activity tracking. Along with that, to make the system portable, the Raspberry Pi 5 was chosen as the dedicated computer, paired with a small touchscreen and a programmable Adafruit macro keypad. This setup allowed for full control over data visualization, making it easy to monitor different brainwave patterns in real-time.
The creator took things further by connecting the brain scanner to a smart light bulb to provide instant meditation feedback. If the user relaxes, the bulb dims. If they get distracted, the light brightens, creating a real-time meditation challenge. The custom-built console housing was designed in Fusion 360 and 3D-printed in multiple parts; it blends retro-futuristic aesthetics with practicality.
This cyberdeck is now a daily tool for the maker, improving focus, memory, and sleep. And the maker proved that anyone can take on ambitious DIY projects. All it takes is an idea, some research, and a willingness to learn along the way.
